  • 1 cup Dried Green Peas (Vatana) - soaked overnight
  • 3 Potatoes (Aloo) - cut into cubes
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder (Haldi)
  • 1/2 cup Fresh coconut - grated
  • 2 tablespoons Coriander (Dhania) Seeds
  • 1 tablespoon White Urad Dal (Split)
  • 2 teaspoons Cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • 2 Dry Red Chillies - broken
  • 2 teaspoons Jaggery - (powdered)
  • 2 teaspoons Tamarind Paste
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 sprig Curry leaves
  • Salt - to taste

Instructions

To begin making Batani Gassi method (Udupi Style Potatoes and Peas Curry), wash and soak the dried green peas overnight.Pressure cook thoroughly the soaked dried peas along with potatoes cubes adding a cup of aqua for one whistle and keep aside.mildly hot a small pot, empty in a teaspoon of cooking oil and char urad dal to golden colour.empty in the coriander seeds, cumin seeds, red chillies and saute till perfumed.When it is cool, make a fine paste along with grated coconut using a mixer grinder adding little aqua.Bring the pressure pot with cooked dried peas and potatoes on mildly hot, empty in the ground masala, about 2 cups of aqua, turmeric ground mix, tamarind and jaggery ground mix.
